CHILDREN’S THEATER OF MADISON (CTM) seeks a Technical Director to lead all aspects of the
engineering, construction, load-ins and strikes of all scenery for CTM’s 5-show mainstage
season and summer programs. The ideal candidate will be an integral part of the planning and
move-in to a new $28M facility housing rehearsal, offices, shops, and performance spaces. This
is a great opportunity to play a major role in the launch of the next era for the company.
The ideal candidate will have a diverse range of experience and training in theatre technology,
and will be an excellent collaborator with department heads and staff.
Founded in 1965, CTM produces 5 mainstage productions per year and has a robust
educational program which includes 6 summer camp presentations. Mainstage
productions perform in both Overture Center for the Arts, where CTM is a resident
company, and as of 2021 in CTM’s new home Madison’s Youth Arts Center.
Productions are directed, designed and staffed by professional artists and technicians,
and cast with professional adults alongside talented youth. Summer camp productions
are all-student productions on unit sets with limited production support. The company
will be moving into a brand new facility in spring 2021 where all rehearsals, technical
production, offices, educational programs and most performances will be held. This new
facility will provide a permanent home for the company and bring all departments
under one roof. Current operating budget for CTM is $1.8M.
■ Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) preferred, or Bachelors of Arts (BA, BFA) in Technical Theatre
plus 3-5 years professional experience
■ Working knowledge of standard scenic construction and practices
■ CAD drafting abilities (AutoCAD, Vectorworks)
■ Rigging
■ Welding skills (preferred)
■ Excellent carpentry skills including finish carpentry
■ Shop management experience
■ Able and willing to work variable hours as needed, including evenings and weekends
■ Excellent time management, financial budgeting, and interpersonal communication
■ Scenic design experience a plus
■ Prepare and manage construction and labor budgets
■ Create and Manage build schedule
■ Oversee purchasing for applicable departments
■ Hire and supervise all shop personnel, including seasonal and overhire
■ Hire and supervise Scenic Charge artist
■ Generate CAD drafting
■ Organizate and maintain shop
■ Assist in season planning and scheduling
■ Insure all safety practices and protocols are followed
■ Work with designers to insure designs are realized to the highest artistic standard
■ Actively participate in the build of all productions
■ Provide instruction on safe and efficient use of tools, equipment, and facilities
■ Attend all specified rehearsals, tech/dress rehearsals, production and staff meetings,
and all other applicable events
■ Create a positive, inclusive and supportive environment
Negotiable; position available immediately and open until filled
■ Salary range: $41,000 - $46,000
■ Available benefits include health, dental, and 403B
