Community theatres are more than stages - they’re lifelines that bring people together through storytelling, creativity, and connection. Unfortunately, Hurricane Helene has left many theatres struggling to rebuild, recover, and continue their work in their communities.
We’ve heard from three theatres hit especially hard, and we’re sharing their stories below to raise awareness about their needs and encourage support. Your help can make a tangible difference for these vital cultural hubs during this difficult time.
ASHEVILLE COMMUNITY THEATRE - Asheville, NC
Helene dealt a severe blow to Asheville Community Theatre, causing structural damage and economic losses estimated between $300,000 and $500,000 - half of their annual budget. The theatre’s optimism about a strong year, with pre-pandemic season ticket sales, has been interrupted, but their determination remains unwavering.
To stay connected, ACT has hosted free, sold-out cabarets while navigating ongoing recovery efforts. They are focusing on financial donations to help cover bulk supply purchases and discounted materials.

NEWPORT THEATRE GUILD - Newport, TN
Flooding devastated the Newport Theatre Guild’s facilities and their local partner, Newport Dance and Cheer Academy, forcing the postponement of The Wizard of Oz. This rural, low-income community is rallying around its theatre, but usual sponsors are unable to contribute due to their own losses.
The theatre is determined to bring joy back to the community by rescheduling The Wizard of Oz for March 2025. They’re also working to provide subsidized tickets to ensure all families can participate in this unifying experience.

HENDERSONVILLE THEATRE - Hendersonville, NC
Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding at Hendersonville Theatre, damaging the lower levels and leaving uninsured expenses. As a small-budget theatre with just 115 seats, the financial strain has been especially significant.
Despite these challenges, the theatre staged Misery in collaboration with Kathy Bates shortly after the hurricane. They are now focused on recovery efforts, including a major fundraiser and new sponsorship initiatives, while continuing to maintain affordable ticket prices for their community.
