Edited by theatre practitioners Mike Poblete and Katherine Rothman, "Vocal Bodies" is a curated collection of monologues that engage the disabled experience in nuanced, complex, and varied ways. The anthology will be published by Smith & Kraus in both print and ebook formats.
We are seeking original monologues that meaningfully explore disability in some way. The featured character does not need to be disabled, nor must disability be the central topic of the piece, provided disability is engaged thoughtfully and substantially. We are particularly interested in informed works that reflect the diversity of disabled experience across tone, form, and perspective—including, but not limited to, comedic, dramatic, experimental, and nontraditional monologues.
Monologues that rely on stereotypes, inspirational tropes, or that otherwise “other” disabled people will not be considered. Special consideration will be given to pieces that are audition-ready and suitable for use in educational, training, and professional contexts.
Multiple submissions are permitted. Submitted work must not have been previously published. Contributing playwrights will receive compensation in the form of a share of the net proceeds from book sales, as defined by the publisher.
The submission deadline is April 1, 2026.
