Playhouse on the Square's NewWorks@TheWorks Playwriting Competition

Deadline
January 1st - June 30th, annually

Description

The NewWorks@TheWorks Playwriting Competition was established in 2013 to renew our focus on cultivating new and original theatre. Playwrights are invited to submit their scripts beginning in January each year. A panel of local directors, actors, and designers carefully select six plays to be part of a staged reading series. Of those six plays, two are chosen to be fully produced as part of an upcoming season to be presented onstage and streamed nationwide.

Along with these fully-mounted productions, the two winning works are each awarded a prize of $750. They receive world premieres in the upcoming season at Playhouse on the Square’s third performance space: TheatreWorks@the Square.

To sponsor or make a donation to the NewWorks@TheWorks Competition, please contact: Savannah S. Miller – [email protected].

2024 NEW WORKS PLAYWRITING COMPETITION
The following outlines the guidelines and rules for the 2024 New Works Playwriting Competition:
There is a $15 entry fee for the competition, which must be paid along with the submitted script. PLEASE NOTE – Members of the Dramatist Guild AND those who have submitted in a previous year need only pay $10. Check, money order, and cash will be accepted. Any script submitted without the entry fee will not be considered. Please make payment out to Playhouse on the Square.

The submission must be written in the English Language.

The submission must be an original, full-length play or musical that is unpublished and unproduced.

The submission must begin with a title page that includes the work’s name and the playwright’s name, address, telephone number, and email. There should also include a character list and scene breakdown if applicable. NOTE* If submitting a musical please include a score and demo.

Submissions that have been previously produced or published will not be accepted. A play that is scheduled for a professional production at the time of submission will also not be accepted. Simultaneous submissions are allowed; however, if your play is selected for production elsewhere, please notify Playhouse on the Square immediately.

The manuscript must be easy to read. It must be typed in no less than 12-point type and page numbered.

The cast for the play or musical must be limited to no more than 10.

The script may have more than one author. Also, the playwright(s) may include a brief biography, but it is not necessary.

Playwrights may submit multiple plays as long as each has an accompanying entry fee. For example, to enter two scripts, the playwright must submit entry fees totaling $30/$20. There will be no revision accepted once a script has been submitted. Revised plays that have been previously submitted to the competition may be submitted again.

There will be no written or oral critique given on scripts submitted. We will notify the playwrights whose plays have been selected for readings. The six plays selected for readings will be announced on our website.

You may email your submission to [email protected] and send your payment separately. Payment can be done electronically following the link on the website. If you do mail, please send the manuscript to Playhouse on the Square, New Works Competition, 66 S Cooper St, Memphis, TN 38104

In order to qualify for this year’s competition, the script must be submitted no earlier than January 1, 2024 and must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2024.

Do not send the only copy of a manuscript. All scripts will be handled with care, but Playhouse on the Square will not be responsible for any loss or damage of your manuscript.
