JOB TITLE: Executive Director
DATE POSTED: 03/03/2023 - 11:59am
JOB TYPE: Administration
LOCATION: Albany, New York
COMPANY/ORGANIZATION: Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center (“The Egg”)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
An iconic performance venue, The Egg has presented great dancers, musicians, and family-oriented performers in the Capital Region in upstate New York for 45 years. A unique fixture in Albany’s Empire State Plaza, The Egg’s two wide-fan theatres and 10,000-square-foot Hart Theatre Lounge offer versatile event spaces, while its lower levels hold classrooms, dance studios, and practice spaces. Over the past two decades, the number of annual presentations and rental events has increased from 60-70 to more than 200, demonstrating the efficiency and dedication of the small staff. The annual budget is about $2M, with 80% of revenues from ticket sales and rentals and 10% from New York State.

There is nowhere like The Egg, and this is the first time in 20 years that the opportunity to take the reins of a legendary facility has been available. With a Board and staff eager for post-pandemic growth, The Egg seeks an ambitious Executive Director who will set the vision for the future, experiment with ways to draw back traditional audiences and establish relationships with new communities, and steer this unique public-private partnership into its next phase as a dynamic upstate presenter.

The Egg’s Executive Director will wear many hats, including performance curation and planning, event marketing, fundraising and external relations, and Board and government relations. The successful candidate will have experience in strategic planning and execution, exceptional management skills, and a desire to effectively position The Egg in a competitive performing arts market. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, whose members are eager to work with an entrepreneurial leader. The salary range is $90,000 – $100,000.

Specific qualifications sought include:

-A passion for performing art presenting and an ability to track and respond to industry trends.
-Diplomacy and the ability to build trust with multiple stakeholders, including Board members and government leaders.
-Strong non-profit financial literacy and analytical skills, with the ability to lead budget creation, understand forecasting models, and take the calculated risks necessary in presenting performances that advance The Egg’s mission and attract diverse audiences.
-Experience with modern marketing and fundraising techniques for performing arts organizations, including social media, membership, sponsorship, and grantwriting.
-Persuasive communication skills, with the authenticity to inspire excitement for The Egg’s work.
-Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, produce deliverables on deadline, and maintain movement toward long-term goals.
