JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Technical Director (TD) holds a pivotal role in the Temple Civic Theatre, overseeing the technical aspects of all productions, including managing lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating building maintenance. The TD works in close collaboration with the Managing Artistic Director (M/AD), contributing significantly to the overall success of the theatre.

About the role

As the TD, you will operate, maintain, and protect the theatre's technical assets, including lighting, sound, and communications equipment and the facilities. Your role is crucial in ensuring the smooth running of all productions.
Create and produce floor plans and construction drawings, adhering to industry standards, that can be translated into workable plans for the Managing Artistic Director (M/AD) and scenic crew.
The TD is a key Collaborator, working closely with the M/AD to determine the technical support for a wide range of events, performances, and camps presented by TCT. This planning is done well in advance of production dates to ensure a smooth and successful production, highlighting the importance of teamwork and collaboration in this role. The TD's organizational skills are crucial in this process.
Construct and supervise set and stage construction and management, requiring a knowledge of tools and equipment.
Assist in recruiting, training, and assigning volunteer technical staff for individual shows, including orienting those volunteers on safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations.
Monitor the condition of equipment, including lighting, sound, tools, paint, and special equipment (foggers/hazers)
Arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints determined by the M/AD. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities.
Consult with the M/AD on preparing and controlling production budgets, including maintaining inventory and ordering specialized supplies.
Plan and manage Tech Week rehearsals and Strike/Tech Sunday for all TCT productions, events, and camps to supervise and assist in the technical aspects.
Make recommendations to the M/AD regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
Ensure all technical aspects of the production work smoothly and safely, coordinating between the artistic and technical departments.
Coordinate schedules so the lighting, sound, set, and other crews have the time to set up their work onstage and that the production elements come together with the deadline provided by the M/AD.
Coordinate with the director and stage manager to ensure actor and crew safety and fulfill the director's vision.
Be accountable for the maintenance and security of the scene shop.
Schedule and time requirements

This is an exempt position. The time off will be flexible within reason but must be arranged in advance and not in conflict with the season.
The technical activities around a production require work before, during, and after rehearsals. Days, evenings, and weekends will be required.
The TD is required to be present at rehearsals and all performances. The TD will run the boards and train all backstage volunteers, including board operators. The TD conducts Tech Sunday and the Strike of every show/event.
Education requirements

Experience is often more important than education, but a bachelor's degree in technical theater is preferred.
Physical Duties and Responsibilities:

Must climb ladders and scaffolding to reach lighting and sound equipment.
Must crawl under sets and scenery to set up and troubleshoot equipment.
Must lift and carry heavy equipment, such as lights, speakers, and set pieces.
The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Information for finalists

Finalist candidates will design a floor plan and design concept for a show chosen by the M/AD and a practical exercise portion monitored by the TCT Shop Foreman and Interim Technical Director. Designs will be evaluated on knowledge of design and execution, including sound and light design.

Compensation

Total compensation is between $50,000-$55,000 per year, including a $5000 benefit allowance to the Health Insurance Marketplace (if needed), and is commensurate with experience.

Temple Civic Theatre has a ¾ thrust stage. The theatre seats 228. The theatre has a scene shop, paint storage, a light booth with an ION board, and a sound booth capable of running 24 wireless mics. Temple Civic Theatre also has a costume storage room, prop storage, and two lofts for storage. The theatre contains a green room, two dressing rooms, a rehearsal/meeting space, a kitchen, and laundry facilities.
